KSA #8: RELATIONSHIPS
I strive to know how to establish, with different students, professional relationships that are characterized by mutual respect, trust and harmony.
FOSTERING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
DRAMA 10-20-30 Sharing Circle
Students participated in a weekly activity called 'Sharing Circle' that enabled each individual to share personal news, updates, experiences, challenges, milestones, thoughts, etc. Each student got an opportunity to share something new with the group while everyone else listened until the person finished speaking before asking questions.
This activity has been a weekly routine for the students prior to my arrival so there was already a level of trust and respect established between peers. The students shared about their latest accomplishments- whether it was winning a medal in dance, competing in the Special Olympics, repairing an old quad or taking up a new hobby as a DJ. During this activity, students brought meaningful items to share as well such as medals, artwork, and videos of a recent adventure. This activity truly helped foster a positive learning community built on mutual respect and trust for students and myself. I was able to get to know the students on a personal and professional level and appreciate what makes each of them unique as individuals.
'FACEBOOK' LEARNER PROFILES
To get to know students as individuals, I had them each complete a learner 'facebook' profile that asked about their interests, hobbies, learning preferences, etc. These profiles were very helpful in understanding students' backgrounds and developing positive relationships.
