WELCOME TO MY EDUCATION PORTFOLIO & BLOG!
My name is Katherine Abella and I am a Senior High School English Language Arts Teacher in Calgary, Alberta. I am a B.Ed graduate from the University of Lethbridge with a specialization in Career Education. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Calgary and I currently reside in Calgary, Alberta.
I grew up in a Southeast Asian country called Brunei Darussalam for 13 years and was immersed in a variety of cultures, languages, and education systems which fostered my passion for learning. In 2004, I immigrated to Canada with my family to seek better educational and employment opportunities. I am passionate about literacy and strive to help students discover their potential as language learners, users, and innovators. I have been fortunate to experience 28 weeks of teaching practica in various Alberta towns and cities through the University of Lethbridge Education program. My experiences have led me to appreciate learner diversity and have shaped my Teaching Philosophy. I have experience volunteering with youth and children through CFC-Youth For Christ, being a Calgary Public Library Reading Buddy, and a Grade 9 private tutor. In my spare time, I enjoy reading a variety of books- some of my favorite authors include George R.R. Martin, Charles Dickens, and John Steinbeck. I also enjoy watching theater and films, playing chess, singing, travelling, and spending time with family and friends. I have quite the love for good food and I enjoy trying new cuisines- Feel free to check out my food blog here :) I also enjoy hiking, running, and practising yoga.
